FoneALIVE! and Computer Sentinel Support BBS 609-988-1717 Main Board Bulletin #2 - FoneALIVE! Product Description FoneALIVE! is a second generation hardware device for keeping unattended automated devices ready to receive incoming telephone calls. It has its own microcomputer chip which monitors the telephone line for abnormal conditions. Bulletin Board Systems, FAX devices, Voice Mail Systems, and office Remote Access Workstations are examples of "systems" requiring automatic protection. When a lockup is detected, FoneALIVE! removes power from the system for 30 seconds. When power is restored, the system returns to normal operation by conducting its automatic power-on sequence. The only other product on the market which provides this protection is the Computer Sentinel which we also manufacture. The Computer Sentinel has the handicap of only working with external modems, because it must connect to the serial port (comm port) of the monitored computer. FoneALIVE! does not require a serial port connection. It connects directly to the telephone line and monitors for abnormal telephone line conditions. FoneALIVE! also provides power to the monitored system. This is done by simply plugging the system power cord into the FoneALIVE! power receptacle. FoneALIVE! is designed to automatically detect the following conditions: 1. Detects when callers disconnect leaving the monitored system locked-up. 2. Detects when callers are making abnormal calls of short duration. This can happen when the monitored system is locked-up but the telephone device is still auto-answering incoming calls. When FoneALIVE! encounters 6 consecutive short duration phone calls (less than 30 seconds), it determines that the monitored system is locked-up. 3. Detects the obvious unanswered rings. Some modems are known to go brain dead and not pass the rings on to the monitored system. FoneALIVE! detects rings directly without the aid of the telephone device. 4. Detects when your system locks up while attempting to answer a call. 5. Includes a self timer mode (2 hours) which can be used for custom applications. When FoneALIVE! detects that the system is not responding properly to telephone calls, it turns off power to the system for 30 seconds, and then restarts the system when power is restored. This will force the system to return to normal configuration and answer calls. Normal human telephone usage is ignored by FoneALIVE!, therefore it doesn't have to be disabled while the telephone line is used locally.
